CINCINNATI – Mike Nugent sometimes pretends he’s kicking a game-winning field goal when he works out, trying to prepare himself for the most pressure-filled moment. Two weeks in a row, he’s come through for real.
Nugent’s field goals in the final seconds gave the Bengals wins at Buffalo and Detroit, vaulting Cincinnati (5-2) into a two-game lead in the AFC North. The Bengals host the New York Jets (4-3) on Sunday.
The Bengals’ kickers have played a big role in their last three wins. Punter Kevin Huber has pinned opponents near the end of games. Nugent has finished them off. He had a 43-yard field goal in overtime for a 27-24 win at Buffalo and a 54-yarder as time ran out for a 27-24 win over Detroit.
